Parliamentary panel receives 90L responses on Waqf Bill
The joint parliamentary panel on Waqf (Amendment) Bill has received over 90 lakh responses on the proposed legislation.
The committee had sought views from all strata of society on the bill through an advertisement issued on August 30. The last date for submitting responses was September 14.
Owing to unprecedented response, the inbox of the official email ID given for the purpose was almost jammed due to heavy documents attached with these emails, said sources aware of the development. They said thousands of mails apart from these 90 lakh responses are lying in the email’s spam section, and a team of 15 persons had been deputed to pore through these responses.
The panel is expected to submit its report in the first week of the Parliament’s winter session, likely to be held in the second half of November. However, the committee, headed by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, may seek more time from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to submit its report.
Meanwhile, representatives of the All India Sajjadanashin Council, Ajmer, which governs the ‘dargah’ of Sufi saint Moin-ud-din Chishti, met the panel on Friday. The committee was told that 720 dargahs, including Ajmer Sharif, don’t come under the Waqf Board’s jurisdiction. Bust seven per cent of the Ajmer dargah’s revenue is given to the All India Waqf Board.
