The case of assault of two BJP MPs on Parliament premises in which Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been identified as a “prime accused” will be investigated by a specialised team of the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police.

“An order regarding transferring of the case to the Crime Branch was received on Friday evening,” an officer privy to the matter told The Tribune.

When asked about the status of the complaint lodged by Congress MPs, the officer replied that they were not able to find any cognisable offence in their complaint.

The Parliament on Thursday witnessed a new low as MPs of the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress clashed while protesting against each other during which BJP MPs Pratap Rao Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput were injured.

Soon after the incident, a BJP delegation led by MPs Anurag Thakur, Bansuri Swaraj and Hemang Joshi went to the Parliament Street police station where they filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi and accused him of “attempted murder” of BJP MPs.

A Congress delegation also lodged a complaint stating that their party president and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge was pushed to the ground by saffron party leaders, causing him “bodily injuries”.

The police received the complaints from the lawmakers of both the parties but registered an FIR on only BJP MP Hemang Joshi’s complaint.

With the Crime Branch now taking over the investigation, the next step will be to record statements of the victim MPs — Rajput and Sarangi — who were earlier not able to give their statements to the police.

Even as the BJP MPs provided video evidence of the incident with their complaints, the investigators will collect CCTV footage and mobile recordings, to validate the claims.
