Quick notes: Sreejesh to join Bhaker as flag-bearer
Celebrated hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh will join star shooter Manu Bhaker as the flag-bearers of the Indian contingent in the closing ceremony on Sunday, a fitting honour and recognition for his contributions to the team. Before homing in on Sreejesh, Indian Olympic Association chief PT Usha spoke with Neeraj Chopra, and she said even the superstar javelin thrower wanted to see the retiring legend as flag-bearer.
4x400m relay teams fail to qualify for finals
The Indian men’s 4x400m relay team failed to live up to expectations as it finished 10th overall to miss a final spot. The quartet of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Muhammed Ajmal, Amoj Jacob and Rajesh Ramesh clocked a season’s best of 3 minutes and 0.58 seconds but that was enough only for a fourth-place finish in the heat and 10th overall out of 16 teams. The women’s 4x400m relay team also failed to qualify for the final after finishing 15th overall out of 16 countries. The quartet of Vithya Ramraj, Jyothika Sri Dandi, MR Poovamma and Subha Venkatesan clocked 3:32.51 to finish eighth in the heat.
Aditi, Diksha slip as Lydia, Morgane share lead
Indian golfers Aditi Ashok (79) and Diksha Dagar (80) slipped on the penultimate day to be tied-40th and tied-42nd, respectively. The two were tied-14th in the 60-player field after two rounds. New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, a two-time medallist at the Olympics, and Swiss Morgane Metraux were joint leaders after three rounds at 9-under.
