Chandigarh, August 8

Team US was disqualified from the 4x100m relay final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, in which their star sprinter, Noah Lyles, did not participate due to COVID-19.

The disqualification stemmed from a poor handoff between starting runner Christian Coleman and Kenny Bednarek, with the baton exchange occurring just outside the designated 30m changeover box. This led to the US team finishing in the seventh place.

Canada won the gold with a final time of 37.50 seconds. The team, led by Andre De Grasse and supported by Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake and Brendon Rodney, delivered a stellar performance that secured their place at the top. De Grasse now boasts seven Olympic medals across three Games.

The victory was especially sweet for Canada, as a video of Lyles mocking their 4x100m team earlier in the season has surfaced online. After the World Relays in the spring, when asked if he considered Canada a threat, Lyles laughed it off and said, “Who? Who?” However, Canada’s win in the very race Lyles had dismissed was the ultimate response, leaving team US without an official finish.

Lyles secured a bronze in the men’s 200m final with a time of 19.70 seconds on Thursday. He appeared visibly exhausted following the race and had to be assisted off the track in a wheelchair. It was later revealed by his mother that Lyles had competed despite testing positive for COVID-19 just two days earlier.
