The Panjab University will install hi-tech camera systems for surveillance on the campus at a cost of Rs 75 lakh. This is the third phase of camera installation exercise on the campus. According to the university authorities, 10 locations, including areas around Gymanisum Hall and Law Auditorium, will be covered this time.

The first two phases were completed at cost of Rs 58 lakh and Rs 75 lakh. Twelve camera systems were set up at eight spots in phase 1, while 12 cameras were installed at 10 locations under phase 2.

The surveillance measures assume importance in the light of recent incidents on the campus, including the death of an outsider in a hostel due to suspected drug overdose.

“The project is in pipeline and we will soon finalise the spots where camera systems will be installed. The campus also witnesses VIP and VVIP visits, which make the installation of surveillance cameras all the more important,” said Chief of University Security Vikram Singh.

As per a university official from the Electrical Department, the cost to install cameras is very high since these are PTZ cameras, which rotate and have high focus and zoom capacity. Moreover, given the vast expanse of the campus, long fibres had to be laid for connectivity with the control room, the official said.

In phase 2, two camera systems each were installed at Sector 25 campus main gate (Alumni House side) and at University Institute of Engineering and Technology gate; one camera each was installed near University Institute of Applied and Management Sciences, near Boys Hostel No. 8, near paramedical block 1, Sector 25 campus gate on Dental Department side, near Girls Hostel No. 2, near Centre for Distance and Online Education, near UIET canteen and near Mori Gate.
