The Punjab State Human Rights Commission today took suo motu cognisance of a photograph carried in these columns with caption “What a mess” capturing sludge at the Sector 26 fruit and vegetable market. Chairperson Justice Sant Parkash also called for a detailed report from the Municipal Corporation before the next date of hearing.

Before parting with the order, Justice Sant Parkash directed the forwarding of the order’s copy to the Municipal Commissioner for compliance. The matter is now scheduled to be taken up for further proceedings on September 3.

“The commission has perused the news item published in the leading daily newspaper under the caption `What a mess’ indicating that sludge makes the Sector 26 fruit and vegetable market a nightmare for visitors. The commission takes suo motu cognisance of the matter and calls for a report from the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh,” Justice Sant Parkash observed.
