Overflowing drain raises a stink, damages national highway
For almost a year sewage has been overflowing from a drain on to the road near Singhpura Chowk on the Ambala-Chandigarh National Highway, but the authorities concerned are yet to act.
The NH has been damaged due to sewage, posing a risk to two-wheeler riders and other road users. Stench emanating from the spot makes it difficult for pedestrians and locals to cross the stretch. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials have not taken any action against the culprit.
The pedestrians complain that stagnant sewage gets splashed on them whenever a heavy vehicles passes by.
On February 9, The Tribune had highlighted that how a newly laid stretch was getting damaged due to stagnating water.
The authorities had plugged it for the time being, but the problem resurfaced a year later.
Piyush Goyal, a resident of Maya Garden, a society nearby, said, “It is clearly visible how sewage from a nearby construction site is spilling on to the road and damaging it, but the authorities concerned are turning a blind eye to it. Foul smell lingers permanently here and the pedestrians are suffering daily. Once the road gets further damaged, it will become an accident spot.”
Sewage from nearby housing societies flows on to the NH every day.
Many housing societies still discharge their waste water in stormwater drain on the NH, which ultimately flows in Ghaggar river untreated.
