Over 52K vehicles registered in 6 months, highest since 2018

Over 52,000 new vehicles were registered during the first six months of this year in Ludhiana. The figures were revealed by the Transport Department.

It marks the highest registration rate since 2018 in the state’s biggest and largest district headquarters in terms of the area and population. While 79,084 new vehicles were registered here in 2023, the count was 70,390 in 2022, 47,930 in 2021, 47,901 in 2020, 76,721 in 2019 and 73,093 in 2018.

However, the registration of vehicles before 2018 remained higher as 1,32,546 vehicles were registered in 2017, 1,22,559 in 2016, 1,30,370 in 2015, 1,23,512 in 2014, 1,15,038 in 2013, and 1,31,816 in 2012. The count of 85,936 vehicle registrations in 2011 was also more than that of this year.

Taking into account this year’s figures, 291 new vehicles were daily hitting roads in Ludhiana and over 8,715 vehicles were registered here every month in 2024 on an average.

The official figures compiled by the Regional Transport Office here revealed that 52,291 vehicles were newly registered in 2024 while over 33,880 vehicles were registered during the corresponding period in 2023, thus marking a 54.34 per cent increase in the registration.

Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Randeep Singh said 31,785 motorcycles/ scooters were registered between January 1 and June 30 this year, followed by 11,734 cars.

Besides, other types of vehicles registered here during the first half of this year include 3,648 e-rickshaws for passengers, 1,910 goods carriers, 931 e-rickshaws with goods carts, 872 agricultural tractors, 656 three-wheelers for passengers, 261 three-wheelers for goods, 125 buses, 100 construction equipment vehicles, 71 harvesters, 61 motorcycles/ scooters with sidecars, 56 earth-moving equipment, 33 crane- mounted vehicles, 25 motor cabs, 16 ambulances, three dumpers, two mopeds, and one road roller and mobile workshop each.

The cumulative figure of the new vehicle registrations in Ludhiana since 2011 has touched the 12,89,187 mark, which accounts for 7,958 new vehicles hitting the roads here every month and a daily registration of over 275 new vehicles in the past thirteen-and-a-half years. “The past six months of 2024 have recorded the maximum number of registrations of new vehicles during the past three years,” the RTO said.
