In a bid to curb the use of harmful plastic kite flying thread, the Amritsar police have arrested one person and seized 40 rolls of the banned thread. The accused, identified as Prince, a resident of Kot Baba Deep Singh Rohan Kumar, was arrested from the Jahajgarj Pataka market area. A case has been registered under Sections 223 of the BNS and Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act against the accused at the B Division police station.

The government had imposed a ban on the use and sale of the plastic kite flying thread, also known as “Chinese dor” in 2017. The thread is made of nylon or plastic and is coated with glass or metal powder, making it extremely sharp and hazardous.

The ban was imposed due to the threat posed by the thread to humans, animals and birds. Every year, numerous cases of injuries and fatalities are reported due to the use of this thread. Birds, in particular, are vulnerable to thread, which can get entangled around their wings or neck, causing serious injury or even death.

Despite ban, the use of plastic kite flying thread is rampant in the city. The police have been conducting regular raids to seize the banned string and arrest those involved in its sale and use.

Besides, the police have appealed to the public to cooperate with them in enforcing the ban on plastic kite flying thread.

The police also warned of strict action against those found violating the ban. “We will take stern action against anyone caught selling or using the banned thread,” said Inspector Sukhbir Singh.
