Olympian Navneet Kaur opens annual sports meet at Sirsa college
Indian women’s hockey team vice-captain and Olympian Navneet Kaur highlighted the importance of sports in holistic student development and building healthy competition while inaugurating the 67th Annual Sports Competition at Government National College, Sirsa. She emphasised that sports not only keep individuals active and healthy but also foster leadership and teamwork skills.
The event, organised by the college’s Physical Education Department, was chaired by Principal Dr Sandeep Goyal, who expressed pride in welcoming Navneet Kaur, along with her father Buta Singh and uncle Manjeet Singh. Dr Goyal mentioned that students would draw inspiration from her achievements.
Navneet Kaur led the march-past and officially hoisted the flag to inaugurate the competition. Earlier, Khyaati, a national-level hammer throw athlete, administered the sportsmanship oath to the participants. The programme also featured a gymnastics performance by alumni Govind Rana and Sahil Mehra, and a lively bhangra performance by the students.
In the men's events, Anil secured the first place in triple jump, Sandeep in the 1,500 m race, and Ishwar in shot put. In the women’s category, Asha topped in long jump and 1,500m race, and Khyaati won the shot put competition.
The college honoured Navneet Kaur and her family with mementos to mark the occasion.
