October heatwave surprises Delhi residents with unseasonably high temperatures
In an unexpected turn of events, Delhi residents are experiencing a heatwave this October, with temperatures soaring above 36°C. After briefly enjoying a respite from the heat, many have been forced to turn their air conditioners back on, as the sweltering conditions leave residents pondering the unpredictable weather patterns this year.

Following the withdrawal of the monsoon, much of northwest India, including Delhi, is facing above-normal daytime and night-time temperatures. These hot conditions are expected to persist for at least another week, although a slight dip in temperatures is anticipated afterwards.
On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Delhi reached 36.5°C, which is 2°C above normal, while the minimum temperature recorded was 24.8°C, exceeding the average by 3°C. Sunday saw similar trends, with a maximum temperature of 35.7°C and a minimum of 24.8°C, both above normal levels. Residents noticed that bright sunshine persisted throughout the day, contributing to the heightened temperatures.
Humidity levels in the city varied between 90 per cent and 37 per cent. The weather department has forecasted continued bright sunshine for the week ahead, with maximum temperatures expected to remain between 35°C and 36°C. Additionally, there has been a slight uptick in pollution levels, though the air quality remains categorised as moderate. The Central Pollution Control Board reported an average air quality index of 143 for Sunday.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), maximum temperatures in Delhi are projected to be around 36°C on October 7 and 8, dropping slightly to 35°C on October 9 and 10. On October 11 and 12, temperatures are expected to rise again to 36°C, with minimums around 23°C. The week will continue to see clear skies and bright sunshine.
Despite the official end of the monsoon season on September 30, the IMD indicates that the complete withdrawal of the monsoon will take additional time, typically concluding around October 15.
