Nurpur district police crack whip on mining, drug mafias
Two years after the establishment of Nurpur police district, there has been a significant decline in the nefarious activities of mining and drug mafias in the Nurpur, Jawali, Fatehpur and Indora subdivisions, thanks to a regular crackdown.
Due to the efforts of former minister Rakesh Pathania, the previous Jai Ram Thakur government had set up Nurpur police district, which started functioning in September 2022.
People of the area feel that the regular police crackdown on the illegal activities and recovery of huge amount of fine and penalty in the past two years has justified the establishment of the Nurpur police district.
As per data procured from the Nurpur SP’s office, the police had recovered Rs 2 crore by issuing 1,793 challans against illegal mining in the past two years. Eighteen FIRs under the Mining and Minerals Act were registered against the offenders and 81 vehicles, including machinery being used in illegal mining in the district, were seized.
The police had also launched an aggressive campaign against the drug mafia, which had inter-state linkages. It is the only police district in the state where three cases were reported under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act. Three notorious drug peddlers are under preventive detention.
Nurpur SP Ashok Ratan, who has recently taken additional charge in the newly created Dehra police district, told the Tribune that the Nurpur district police had registered 212 cases under the NDPS Act in the past two years. After investigation, movable and immovable assets worth Rs 15.25 crore of seven habitual drug peddlers had been frozen.
“The police have recovered 25 kg charas, 36 kg poppy husk, 5.45 kg heroin (chitta) and Rs 1.29 crore in cash from the drug peddlers,” he added.
The SP said 8,939 online challans were issues to traffic offenders through Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) and fine to the tune of Rs 2.25 crore was realised.
