The Regional Passport Centre, under the directives of the Ministry of Home Affairs, is set to launch a mobile passport van service in the state by the end of the year. The initiative aims to streamline passport application processes, particularly for residents of remote areas.

To avail of this service, applicants must register on the official passport services website and select the mobile van option. Upon registration, a date and time for the van’s arrival will be provided. All verification and documentation processes will be conducted via the van, eliminating the need to visit the Regional Passport Office.

The Passport Centre recently conducted a successful trial of the mobile van at the Passport Service Centre in Panthaghati, where five applicants were issued appointments. The positive response has encouraged the department to expedite the service launch.

Varun Kumar Sharma, Regional Passport Officer, Shimla, emphasised the service’s importance in reducing the travel burden for people in far-flung areas. “This initiative will ensure convenience for applicants by bringing passport services directly to their doorsteps,” he stated. He added that all necessary preparations have been completed, and the service is expected to roll out within two weeks.

The state currently has seven Passport Seva Kendras in Shimla, Una, Kangra, Hamirpur, Palampur, Kullu, and Mandi. According to officials, around 40 to 50 people apply for passports daily across the state. The mobile van service is expected to significantly enhance accessibility for these applicants.
