No steps taken for holding mayor poll by raising hands: Cong
Expressing anguish over the attitude of the UT Administration, the local unit of the Congress has alleged that no steps have been taken so far to approve the resolution on conducting future elections for the posts of mayor, senior mayor and deputy mayor by raising hands.
In a statement issued here today, Rajiv Sharma, chief spokesperson of the local unit, stated that the people of Chandigarh deserve transparent elections to elect their mayor unlike what happened on January 30 when the city became infamous for what the SC had called ‘murder of democracy’ in the MC elections.
To prevent tampering with votes in future, the INDIA block councillors voted to pass a resolution on October 29 to amend regulation 6 of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulations of 1996 in order to conduct mayoral elections by raising of hands instead of secret ballot.
The Congress spokesperson further stated that Gulab Chand Kataria in his capacity as the UT Administrator chaired a meeting of the MC held last month, but neither did he utter a word to appreciate the path breaking resolution adopted by the House to ensure free and fair mayoral elections, nor did he hint at any intention of the Chandigarh Administration to accord its approval on the resolution in near future, even as the next mayoral election is approaching fast.
