Ravneet Singh Bittu, Union Minister of State for Railway and Food Processing Technology, on Friday said “Emergency” movie of Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut was being opposed to protect late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was responsible for a lot of atrocities on the Sikhs.

“Don’t you want people to know about the riots that took place in 1984? Whatever happened during the rule of Indira Gandhi, how Sikhs were tortured, everyone should know that. How Punjabis and Sikhs were harassed during the Emergency should be highlighted,” Bittu, who switched to the BJP from the Congress before the Lok Sabha elections, said in a brief video address. The loss suffered by the Sikhs should come to the fore, he said.

Bittu said that there was no scene in the film that tarnished the image of Sikhs and Punjabis. “Everything that happened during the Emergency has been faithfully reproduced in the film. Scholars were sent to watch the film,” Bittu said.

He added that three-four scenes of the movie were removed so that sensibilities were not hurt.
