Palampur, January 8
The upper reaches of Dhauladhars and Chhota and Bara Bhangal have been experiencing heavy snowfall for the past 20 hours.
Rain and snow have crippled life in the region. Many parts of Palampur, Baijnath, Jaisinghpur and adjoining areas remained without power following a snag in the 33kV transmission line, which feeds many parts of Kangra. The supply was restored after an hour though.
Telecommunication and transport services too have been hit. Many areas have not received drinking water. Vehicular movement has been suspended in Chhota Bhangal and Barot following heavy snowfall at Jhattingri. No bus could reach Barot today.
Official sources said over 100 vehicles are stranded at Multhan and Barot. Entire Chhota Bhanghal is without power.
“There is adequate stock of foodgrains and kerosene in the valley. The administration is in touch with panchayats and the local authorities. If weather permits, the PWD will start road restoration work tomorrow. It can take a week for the restoration of the power supply in the upper areas of Chhota Bhanghal, where major loss to government property has been reported,” an official spokesman said.
