Nine more birds found dead in Chandigarh

Nine more birds were found dead in different areas of the city today. Debendra Dalai, Chief Conservator of Forests, UT, said seven crows, an owl and a pigeon were found dead in the city.

However, all 21 samples of dead birds sent to the Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RDDL), Jalandhar, so far had tested negative for avian influenza, he said.

Dr Kanwarjit Singh, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, UT, said they had started collecting samples of poultry and other birds from different areas of the city and these would be sent to the RDDL for the bird flu test.

He, however, said they had decided to send the routine samples on the 5th and 20th of every month. Surveillance had been increased in the city in the wake of the outbreak of bird flu in the Barwala area of Panchkula.
