Amritsar, July 15
The police have nabbed the Nihang, who had entered the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) premises, located near Guru Nanak Dev University and threatened students not to smoke outside the campus. The incident occurred around eight days ago.
The arrested suspect was identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Bikkar Singh, a resident of the Chheharta area. He was booked by the police under Section 332 (C) (Criminal trespass), 126 (2) (wrongful restraint) and 351 (Criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“No one would be allowed to take law into their hands,” said Police Commissioner Ranjit Singh Dhillon. The incident had created panic among students. Most of the IIM students belong to other states.
The Nihang threatened to chop students’ hands in case they did not relent from smoking outside the campus.
Heera Singh, security guard of the Government Polytechnic College, where the IIM is located, stated to the police that he was at the gate while several students were standing near a kiosk outside the campus. Meanwhile, a Nihang came there on a bike and started using abusive language and threatened students not to smoke. Some students came back inside campus while others boarded a bus on the institution’s premises.
He said the Nihang forced his entry into the IIM campus and boarded a bus parked on the premises. He threatened students not to smoke outside the campus. The Nihang said if they did so he would chop their hands.
The incident took place when students were heading towards hostel from the temporary IIM campus on the institute’s bus.
