The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a geotechnical investigation at 60 landslide-prone locations on the Kiratpur-Manali highway in Mandi district to enhance safety of travellers.

The NHAI has initiated a comprehensive geotechnical investigation at the critical 9 Mile stretch of the Kiratpur-Manali four-lane highway in the district. The decision has been taken in view of a series of severe landslide incidents in the past two years, particularly during the rainy season, which rendered the highway unsafe for travellers.

The 9 Mile stretch has been witnessing major landslides, with debris blocking the highway and disrupting travel and raising safety concerns. The Kiratpur-Manali highway, which connects to the popular destinations of Kullu, Manali and Lahaul and Spiti, is not only vital for the tourism industry but also serves as a crucial link to the Manali-Leh highway.

This highway plays a key role in facilitating the transport of essential supplies to the Indian Army stationed in the remote regions of Leh and Ladakh.

In light of the ongoing safety challenges, the NHAI has commenced a detailed geotechnical survey of the affected areas. The investigation aims to assess the geological conditions and identify the best course of action to stabilise the slopes and ensure the safety of travellers. Based on the findings of the survey, the NHAI will consider various options, including widening the highway, stabilising the slopes, or constructing an over-bridge to mitigate the risk of landslides.

Varun Chari, Director of the Kiratpur-Manali four-lane highway project, emphasised the importance of the survey. “The geotechnical investigation is crucial for understanding the underlying issues that are contributing to landslides. Based on this report, we will make informed decisions to enhance the safety of the highway and the public traveling on it,” he added.

He said that there were around 60 active landslide locations on the Kiratpur-Manali highway where a geotechnical investigation was being conducted. In the first phase, the geotechnical investigation was being conducted on the highway between Mandi and Manali.

Local stakeholders and travellers are awaiting the outcomes of the investigation, as they hope a permanent solution will improve safety and also support the region’s economy and strategic needs. As the NHAI moves forward with this initiative, the focus remains on ensuring a reliable and secure transportation corridor for all users.
