National Junior Kurash Championship begins today
The two-day 12th National Junior Kurash Championship (boys’ and girls’) is set to be organised by the state Amateur Association of Kurash at Vidyavati International School, Malkwal, near here from tomorrow.
What is Kurash?
- Kurash is a Central Asian form of wrestling that originated in Uzbekistan
- The objective of the sport, which is the national wrestling sport of Uzbekistan, is to grab hold of the opponent by the towel around their waist, and throw them on the ground on their back
The national championship will start on Wednesday, and will be opened by Kangra Lok Sabha MP Rajiv Bhardwaj and Lt Gen BS Jamawal (retd). The closing ceremony is set to be held on October 3, and will be presided over by Speaker Kuldeep Pathania.
In the championship, 780 boys and girls from the state, West Bengal, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Manipur, Rajasthan, Tripura, Telangana, UP, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Punjab, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Bihar and Delhi are set to participate. BBM Group of Institutes managing director Rakesh Pathania, the host of the championship, said this was the first time that the event was being organised in the state.
A state-of-the-art indoor stadium equipped with requisite facilities had been constructed at Vidyavati International School in Malakwal so that budding sportspersons could get a chance to participate in sports activities, he added. He said 40 match referees and around 80 technical assistants would provide their services at the championship.
