Samajwadi Party’s Rampur Member of Parliament Mohammad Azam Khan, his legislator wife Tazeen Fatima and former MLA son on Wednesday surrendered in the district court after which they were remanded to judicial custody for seven days.

The court of Rampur Additional District Judge 6 sent Azam Khan’s family to jail till March 2, the next date of hearing, in the forged birth certificate case of son Abdulla Azam.

The family had been ignoring summons by the courts in various cases pending before various courts.

On Tuesday non-bailable warrants had been issued against them in the forged birth certificate case.  The Rampur special MP-MLA court also ordered attachment of their properties.

When their several attempts to get anticipatory bail were also rejected on Tuesday the trio surrendered in court today.

Trouble for the Rampur MP Azam Khan started soon after he defeated BJP candidate Jaya Prada during the Lok Sabha election in May, 2019.

He and his family—his Rampur MLA wife and former MLA son Abdullah Azam —were implicated in close to 85 criminal cases of land grabbing, encroachment, stealing books and furniture, power theft, buffalo and goats’ theft as well as charges of the son being elected to the Vidhan Sabha in 2017 on a forged birth certificate when he was still a few months short of the eligible age.

On the basis of a court order which found him guilty of forgery, the son lost his membership of the Vidhan Sabha a few months ago.
