The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly today passed a resolution by voice vote against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) amidst protest by Opposition BJP, RLP members.

After Kerala and Punjab, Rajasthan is the third state to pass a resolution against the CAA. All three states are ruled by non-BJP governments.

The Assembly also demanded the Centre to reverse its decision on implementing the National Population Register (NPR), an exercise seen as a precursor to the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shanti Dhariwal said the CAA violated the provisions of the Constitution. “Therefore, the House resolves to urge the Centre to repeal the CCA to avoid any discrimination on the basis of religion in granting citizenship and to ensure equality before law for all religious groups in India.”

The new Act was against the preamble of the Constitution and the “secular” norms of the country, he said.

Challenging the Congress government, Leader of the Opposition G Kataria said: “Not only you, your seven generations will have to implement the new Act in the state, as it is notified in the Gazette.”
