Lt Gen Harpal Singh appointed Engineer-in-Chief of Indian Army

Lt Gen Harpal Singh has been appointed as the next Engineer-in-Chief of the Indian Army. He will take over from the incumbent, Lt Gen SK Shrivastava, on December 1.

At present, Lt Gen Harpal Singh is posted as the Director-General, Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Maj Gen Rajeev Chaudhary, who has earlier served as Chief Engineer Southern Command, will take over the reins of BRO.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Lt Gen Harpal Singh was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in December 1982. He commanded a Border Roads Task Force in Jammu and Kashmir and has also served as the Chief Engineer of BRO’s Project Dantak in Bhutan, Chief Engineer (Navy), Mumbai and Chief Engineer Eastern Command.

As Engineer-in-Chief at Army Headquarters, he will be responsible for the functioning of the Combat Engineers that provide field support to operational formations, BRO that is responsible for construction and maintenance of communication infrastructure in border areas and the Military Engineer Service that undertakes civil works like construction and maintenance of buildings and roads in military areas.
