Shaming the name of Mahatma Gandhi, the police in Rajkot today found huge quantity of liquor bottles from the compound of a school founded by the Father of the Nation even as the chief ministers of Gujarat and Rajasthan indulged in verbal duel over the alleged failure of prohibition policy in the Mahatma’s home state.

Acting on a tip off, the Rajkot police raided the compound of Rashtriya Shala, the school set up by Gandhiji that was witness to many satyagraha agitations during the freedom movement, and found liquor bottles worth over Rs 5.18 lakh stacked in a staff quarter.

The police said Sandeep Dakshini, who was staying in the quarter along with his wife, was absconding. The police believed that the liquor bottles were stored for selling on a huge premium for New Year bashes.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who was here to participate in the state Congress party’s “Jan Vedana Andolan”, said if the state government was serious in implementing the liquor ban, it should have contacted the governments in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana and sought their co-operation for stopping the flow of liquor. “If all the states joined hands, it would not have been easy for the bootleggers to bring in so much of liquor into Gujarat,” Gehlot said.

An irritated Rupani retorted, “Gehlot has no business to talk on failure of prohibition policy in Gujarat. If he has the guts, he should first introduce total prohibition in Rajasthan and then we will discuss from where liquor is made available.” — OC

‘Gandhiji’ printed in place of ‘gambling’

Bhopal: One of the answers in the Class X preparatory exam paper of the Madhya Pradesh State Education Board had the word “Gandhiji” printed instead of “gambling” in what seems to be a typing mistake. The error appeared in a model test paper to prepare weak students before they appear for the final exams. In reply to a question on what were the qualities of “subuddhi” (righteous man) and “kubuddhi” (immoral man), the answer read “kubuddhi was a wicked man and led a life of drinking and gandhiji”, instead of “drinking and gambling”.
