New Delhi, February 8

One of the most vituperative elections, Delhi recorded a voting percentage of 61.76 till midnight (according to the ECI voter turnout app). The state had witnessed a voter turnout of 67.12 per cent in 2015 and 65.63 per cent in 2013.

A lower voting percentage initially kept the main contenders on their toes. Sources said AAP’s top leadership went into a huddle, despite the exit polls predicting an easy win for the party, with a confident BJP claiming it was certain of victory.

According to an AAP functionary, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal held a meeting with senior party leaders, including Sanjay Singh and Manish Sisodia, and political strategist Prashant Kishor at his residence on Saturday night. Later, Sanjay Singh said party volunteers would maintain a vigil, and camp outside strong rooms across the capital.

He said there were 30 strong rooms where EVMs had been kept and that teams of volunteers would stand guard outside.

“Exit polls have got it wrong in the past too,” claimed Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi after a meeting of senior leaders of the Delhi unit called by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. “Our voters came late and voted in big numbers in the evening. We are certain of forming the next government in Delhi,” Lekhi said.
