Once a symbol of heritage and beauty in the heart of Nahan, Chaugan Ground is now a shadow of its former self. Historically significant, this iconic site has fallen victim to unchecked commercialisation, as constant profit-driven events have led to its gradual deterioration. Once a lush field that witnessed many princely-era moments, it is now in distress, with residents lamenting its decline.

The ground, once celebrated for its cultural significance, has lost its charm under the strain of frequent fairs and events. Recent heavy rainfall has worsened its condition, turning large portions of the ground into a waterlogged mess. The sight of the once-pristine field resembling a pond has caused concern among locals, who view it as a vital part of the city’s identity.

Locals expressed their frustration, questioning why the municipal council, which profits from renting the ground for events, fails to invest in its upkeep. A concerned resident stated, “If the council is earning lakhs from this ground, why is that money not being used for its maintenance?”

Despite efforts to close the ground for sports until August 31 for monsoon maintenance, the situation has worsened, with water accumulation visible in several areas. The city’s sports enthusiasts, who rely on Chaugan Ground for recreational activities, are calling for immediate restoration efforts.

The decline of Chaugan Ground is not just a current concern but also threatens the preservation of Nahan’s cultural legacy. Without urgent intervention, this historically significant landmark may deteriorate beyond repair, depriving future generations of a key symbol of the city’s heritage. Locals urge the municipal council to take swift action to restore Chaugan Ground to its former glory and ensure it remains a vibrant part of Nahan’s cultural landscape.
