Nahan MC launches stray removal drive after residents voice concern
In response to the growing problem of stray cattle in Nahan, the Municipal Council, under the directives of Sirmaur DC Sumit Khimta, has initiated a comprehensive operation to remove these animals from the town’s streets. Stray cattle had become a significant issue, contributing to increased road accidents, sanitation problems and risks to public safety.
For months, residents voiced their concerns about the rising number of stray cattle, which wandered freely through the town’s alleys, causing disruptions for pedestrians and vehicles alike. The animals not only posed traffic hazards but also created unsanitary conditions, with their waste scattered across public areas. In some instances, the cattle reportedly attacked passersby, further emphasizing the urgency for a solution.
In response, the Municipal Council launched an official drive to capture and relocate the stray cattle. As part of the operation’s first phase, a team was deployed to round up the animals from different areas of the town. These cattle were initially gathered at the Chaugan Ground before being transported to Kotla Barog Gau Sanctuary, a shelter equipped to care for stray animals.
During the initial phase, officials reported the capture of 20 stray cattle. This effort is expected to continue until most of the stray animals are removed from the town. At the sanctuary, the cattle will receive proper care and food, ensuring their well-being while addressing the town’s issues.
The problem of stray cattle in Nahan is not a new one, but the recent increase in the number of these animals had intensified the situation. With cows and bulls roaming residential areas and main roads, traffic accidents became more frequent. Drivers often found themselves navigating around the cattle, putting both their safety and the flow of traffic at risk.
Beyond traffic concerns, the stray cattle also contributed to unsanitary conditions throughout the town. These animals were often seen rummaging through garbage and wandering in marketplaces, raising health concerns among locals. The degrading cleanliness of the city had become a major point of criticism.
The initiative to remove stray cattle has been welcomed by Nahan residents, who had long awaited a solution to this growing problem. Many see the Municipal Council’s actions as a crucial step toward improving public safety and restoring the town’s cleanliness. Officials expressed optimism that the drive would lead to a significant improvement in hygiene and safety across Nahan.
The MC has stated that this operation will be an ongoing process, with additional cattle expected to be captured and relocated in the coming days. Authorities are also considering long-term solutions to prevent the re-emergence of this issue. These measures may include stricter regulations on livestock ownership and the development of sustainable management plans for stray animals in the future.
