A journey of growth and success
I WAS just 20, fresh out of college, and about to embark on the first major adventure of my life — a 15-day training for my first job as a medical representative. I remember my excitement and anxiety as I boarded the Rajdhani Express from Delhi to Mumbai. Little did I know that this trip would leave a lasting impact on my life and career.
As the train chugged along, I found myself seated next to a senior executive working for a nationalised bank. He must have sensed my nervous energy as he soon struck up a conversation. We began talking about my new job, my plans and my aspirations. He listened attentively, and then, with the wisdom of someone who had been through decades of professional life, started sharing stories from his career.
At first, I was a little apprehensive. What could an experienced banker possibly teach me, a young medical representative just starting out? But as we spoke, I found myself captivated by his experiences. He had built a successful career from humble beginnings and despite the inevitable ups and downs, his calm demeanour and deep insights showed me the value of persistence, hard work and integrity.
One particular piece of advice he shared with me remains fresh in my memory even today, 30 years later. “Do every task assigned to you meticulously and with complete dedication,” he said, looking me squarely in the eye. “Success will follow. When you put your heart and soul into your work, the results will take care of themselves.”
That simple, yet profound, piece of advice has stayed with me. His words gave me clarity. I realised that while I might not always have control over outcomes, I could control the effort and dedication I put into my work.
As the years went by, I made this philosophy the cornerstone of my professional life. Whether I was assigned a routine task or a major project, I approached it with the same level of dedication, aiming to do it to the best of my ability. I wasn’t chasing promotions or accolades — I was chasing excellence in everything I did. And, as the senior executive had promised, success followed. By the grace of God, I have achieved more than I ever imagined possible in my career, and I believe it is because I followed his advice.
Looking back, I realise that life is full of such small but meaningful encounters that can change your destiny. That man was a stranger, yet his words helped shape my career and life. His advice has become the guiding principle of my life.
As I reflect on that train journey, I am reminded of the power of genuine connections and the lessons we can learn from the people we meet, often when we expect it the least. That brief conversation on the Rajdhani Express provided me one of the most valuable lessons of my life — a lesson that continues to shape me to this day.
