Muktsar: Cops’ ‘grounded’ approach to war against drugs

To make people feel comfortable and to extract information related to drug menace from them, the Muktsar district police have started behaving like commoners. A police team under the leadership of Malout DSP Pawanjit recently held a meeting on the drug issue at Jhorar village, where the cops sat on the floor along with the public. The village is notorious for the drug problem.

Notably, a large number of cases have been registered under the NDPS Act in the village, 13 km from Malout town.

Malout DSP Pawanjit said, “This is a fact that Jhorar village is notorious for drugs. I, along with the SHO and additional SHO of Malout Sadar police station, held a meeting with the villagers and sat on the floor with them. We discussed the ways to curb the drug menace. Besides, the villagers raised some other problems being faced by them, which are being looked into. This is just a step to make the public feel friendly and assist us in our duty.”

Meanwhile, the cops are also holding seminars in educational institutes, ‘sath’ (village common land), etc. Faridkot IGP Gursharan Singh Sandhu had recently attended a programme at the Red Cross Bhawan in Muktsar town, in which nearly 300 representatives of different organisations, sarpanches and others participated.

Muktsar SSP Bhagirath Singh Meena said the district police had frozen the properties of drug smugglers worth about Rs 3 crore in the recent past. “We are also motivating people who want to assist us in our ongoing war against drugs,” he claimed.

Ranjit Singh, founder member of the anti-drug committee of Gurusar village here, said, “We have started reviving the anti-drug committees in the district and cops are supporting us as of now.”
