Mukhtar Ansari’s son gets protection from arrest
New Delhi, January 25
The Supreme Court on Thursday granted protection from arrest to gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari’s son Umar Ansari in a criminal case related to alleged violation of the model code of conduct during the 2022 Assembly elections.
A Bench led by Justice Hrishikesh Roy issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh Government on Umar’s petition challenging the December 19, 2023, Allahabad High Court order turning down his anticipatory bail plea after senior counsel Kapil Sibal submitted on behalf of the petitioner that the main accused had already been granted regular bail in the case. The Allahabad HC had rejected his anticipatory bail plea, noting that the offence was made out in view of the facts and circumstances of the case.
The police alleged in its FIR dated March 4, 2022, against Abbas Ansari (SBSP candidate from Mau Sadar seat), Umar Ansari and 150 unknown people that on March 3, 2022, at Pahadpura ground, Abbas Ansari, Umar Ansari and organiser Mansoor Ahmad Ansari in a public meeting called for settling a score with the Mau administration.
