Mohali civic body mops up Rs 17 crore as property tax

The Mohali Municipal Corporation has collected around Rs 17 crore property tax for the year 2024-2025 till now, officials said. They are hoping to collect an equal amount in the next week as September 30 is the deadline for property owners to avail 10 per cent discount on the levy.

The pace of tax payers is expected to increase significantly this week as the civic body is geared up to make it a hassle-free process, they said.

There are more than 41,227 taxable units (residential, industrial and commercial buildings) in the city. With several shopping malls opening up and houses being constructed in Mohali this year, the civic body expects an enhanced income.

According to the current budget, the income from property tax is expected to be around Rs 3,850 lakh this year. In 2022, the civic body had collected around Rs 33 crore in property tax. Punjab municipal funds, property tax, advertisement fee, excise duty, and water bills are the main sources of income of the civic body.

According to a notification dated December 31, 2014, the Department of Local Government has put five cities, including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala, in the ‘A’ category for tax purposes.
