Mohali CCTV surveillance project gets new deadline

The September-end deadline for the installation of CCTV cameras under the City Surveillance and Traffic Management System project has now been reset to mid-November following certain delays at the end of GMADA in executing the project.

The Punjab Police Housing Corporation had planned to install over 400 CCTV cameras in the city at the cost of Rs 17.70 crore. The project is aimed at curbing traffic violations, hooliganism and illegal activities by monitoring 18 busy junctions in the city with CCTV cameras. Besides, two speed detectors will be installed on the Airport Road.

Reviewing the progress of work during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee, Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain asked the project officials to speed up the project. She was apprised that 80% of the project had been completed. She asked the project incharge to integrate the project with the VAHAN app so that challans could be automatically issued to the offenders.

The DC directed various agencies responsible for fixing the black spots, including the National Highway Authority of India, GMADA, the Municipal Corporation, the PWD and the Zirakpur civic body, to complete the work by November 12 to ensure the safety of commuters. She also asked NHAI officials to immediately repair the non-functional lights at Zirakpur and install new ones at Dairi (Banur) T-point.

The DC directed Mohali MC officials to make all defunct traffic light signals functional, especially the ones on the Phase 9/10 and 10/11 roads and the Fortis light point.

Jain also directed GMADA officials to expedite the construction of eight roundabouts in the city.

It was informed during the meeting that a non-official member of the committee, Harpreet Singh, has started an audit of the schools having entry gates facing towards roads to take appropriate steps for the safety of students.
