Narendra Modi, Mauritius PM open airstrip, jetty in Agalega
New Delhi, February 29
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritius counterpart Pravind Jugnauth jointly inaugurated a new airstrip and a jetty along with six community development projects, all fully financed by India, at Agalega Island in Mauritius via video conferencing on Thursday.
Mauritius will also be the first country to join India’s Jan Aushadhi initiative. “With this, the people of Mauritius will get the benefit of better quality made-in-India generic medicines,” said PM Modi. This would allow the sourcing of about 250 high-quality medicines at low rates from the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India.
“The inauguration of these projects is a testimony to the robust and decades-old development partnership between India and Mauritius and will fulfil the demand for better connectivity between mainland Mauritius and Agalega, strengthen maritime security and foster socio-economic development,” said an official statement.
Earlier, UPI and RuPay card services in Mauritius were launched jointly by the PMs of both nations on February 12. Jugnauth said history was being made with the inauguration of the new airstrip and jetty along with six community development projects and lauded India’s contribution towards funding the entire project.
In his fifth interaction with Jugnauth, PM Modi said Mauritius was a key partner of India’s “neighbourhood first policy” and a special partner under Vision SAGAR.
In the last 10 years, PM Modi informed India had extended a credit line of $1 billion along with $400 million worth of assistance to the people of Mauritius.
