Chandigarh: Two motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched a mobile phone from a man in Sector 51. According to the police, complainant Navjeet Sharma, a resident of Sector 51, reported that the miscreants snatched his mobile phone from near his house recently. The police were informed following which a case has been registered at the Sector 49 police station. TNS

Guard hurt as gun goes off

Chandigarh: A private security guard was injured after his gun went off while cleaning at his house in Sector 20 here on Thursday. The victim, Raj Pal, was hit on the leg. His neighbours gathered at the spot and the police were informed. He was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where his condition is said to be stable. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter at the Sector 19 police station. TNS

Research grant for PU team

Chandigarh: Dr Gurpal Singh (UIPS), Dr Neha Singla (biophysics) and Dr Ravi P Barnwal (biophysics) from Panjab University have been given the Indo-Egypt research project by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), India, and Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT), Egypt. The research project has been selected among 120 projects submitted by different scientists across the world. The team will collaborate with Dr Rehab Hamdy Ahmed, Elsaid Ashour and Prof Mohamed Mosaad Salama of Mansoura University, Egypt. TNS

312 students get degree

Kharar: As many as 312 students got their degree in BTech, MTech, MBA and BArch during the annual convocation at Indo Global Colleges. The chief guest on the occasion was Manpreet Singh, IAS officer, who is presently serving as the Special Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Fishery and Dairy Development, Punjab. The chief guest said the future of the country was in the right hands. He urged students to be innovative and come up with cutting-edge solutions to the problems the faced. Sukhdev Kumar Singla, Chairman, Indo Global Colleges, advised the students to work hard for achieving their goals in life. Mystery shrouds youth’s death

Zirakpur: A youth was found dead under mysterious circumstances here on Thursday. The victim has been identified as Ashu (25), a resident of Shaharanpur. He was working with a catering company. The police said Ashu's health suddenly deteriorated and he died. The police shifted the body to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for a post-mortem examination. OC

Maloya SHO Transferred

Chandigarh: The SHO of the Maloya police station, Inspector Harinder Singh Sekhon, was today transferred to the crime branch. Meanwhile, DSP Palak Goel of the DANIPS cadre, who is presently under training, will look after the charge of the Maloya SHO. The transfer orders were issued by SP Manoj Kumar Meena. With Harinder Singh being transferred to the crime branch, there will be three Inspectors in the wing, including Ranjit Singh, who is presently the incharge of the wing, and Sher Singh. TNS

Man arrested for raping 30-yr-old

Ambala: The police arrested Gulshan (30) for allegedly raping a 30-year-old woman. Gulshan was produced before a local court, which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody. Women police station SHO ispector Sunita said the victim had approached the women police station on February 26 to report that the accused had allegedly raped and threatened her with dire consequences on February 23. She said earlier in 2014, the accused was booked for raping the same victim, but later he was acquitted after the victim turned hostile. “The accused promised to marry the victim, but he married someone else following which she reported the matter to us,” the inspector said. Man booked for abducting girl

Ambala: A young girl was reportedly abducted in Naraingarh near here, the police said. Raghubir Singh of Naraingarh had reported to the police that Jaswinder Singh, alias Koli, had abducted his young daughter. The police have booked the accused and started further investigations into the case. TNS

One killed, 2 hurt in mishaps

Ambala: A man was killed while two others sustained serious injuries in separate road mishaps in various parts of the district in the past 24 hours. Harpreet Singh of Baldev Nagar near here was killed after a rashly driven dumper hit his motorcycle near Kakru village in Ambala City. In a separate mishap, Mohammad Rizwan of Mahesh Nagar near here was left seriously injured when a speeding unknown car hit him on Boh road in Ambala Cantonment. In another accident, Aman Kumar of Ambala sustained serious injuries after a rashly driven tempo hit his motorcycle near Sahibpur village in Ambala. The police have registered separate cases against the suspects and launched further investigations. TNS

3 held for snatching

Ambala: A minor was among three persons arrested in separate cases of snatchings. Parth Kumar and a minor boy were arrested for snatching a mobile phone of a woman in Sector 10, Ambala City, on September 12 last. The snatched mobile phone was recovered from them. While Kumar was sent to 14-day judicial remand, the minor was sent to juvenile home by a local court. In a separate case, Harinder Singh of Mohali was arrested for snatching gold earrings of a woman in Panjokhra on March 10. The arrested accused will be produced before a local court on Friday. TNS

Four proclaimed offenders held

Ambala: The district police have arrested four proclaimed offenders in separate criminal cases registered against them in various police stations across the district during the past 24 hours. Kulwant Singh of Saha wanted in Saha, Inderjeet Singh of Yamunanagar wanted in Ambala City, Munnu, alias Munna, of Ambala City wanted in Ambala City and Dilbagh of Kaithal wanted in the Ambala Sadar police station were evading their arrests ever since they were booked by the police following which the courts had declared them proclaimed offenders. The arrested fugitives will be produced before the local courts on Friday. TNS

Tennis meet from tomorrow

Chandigarh: The Sunrise Tennis Academy will organise an open tennis tournament for boys and girls at the Chandigarh Club, Sector 1, here from March 14-15. The event will be held in U-10, U-12, U-14 and U-16 age groups, the organisers said here on Thursday. The interested players need to send their enteries before 5.30 pm on March 13. TNS
