Amritsar, August 30

A milkman identified as Kulbir Singh was shot dead by two armed assailants near Taragarh Talawan village falling under the Jandiala Guru police station here on Thursday evening. An old enmity is cited as the reason behind the murder.

Following complaint filed by Amrik Singh, father of the deceased, the police booked five persons for the murder. In his complaint, Amrik Singh alleged that the suspects got his son murdered through contract killers.

Ravinder Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the police was verifying claims and raids were on to nab the suspects.

Among those booked included a US-based NRI identified as Jagroop Singh, alias Jagga, his parents Kashmir Singh and Iqbal Kaur, residents of Dharad village, and Varinder Singh and Sukha Singh, both residents of Takhtu Chak village in Vairowal, Tarn Taran.

The complainant alleged that the suspects got Kulbir Singh killed in order to avenge the death of their daughter Daljit Kaur who died in 2011. Though the suspects had got Kulbir Singh booked for her death, he was acquitted by a court after two years.

Kulbir Singh (40), a resident of Dharad village, was returning home in his car after delivering milk to his customers as per his daily routine. Yesterday, when Kulbir reached near Taragarh Talawan village, two bike-borne persons forced him to stop his car and asked him to lower the window glass of the vehicle. Before the victim could understand, the suspect took out pistol and shot him. Kulbir suffered three gunshot injuries, two in the head and one in the arm. He died on the spot.

Amrik Singh told the police that Gurmej Singh of Taragarh Talawan village informed him about his son’s murder. “Kashmir Singh’s family used to suspect that Kulbir had illicit relations with their daughter Daljit Kaur who used to work in a hotel in Amritsar. She died in 2011,” stated Amrik Singh in his complaint to the police.

Amrik further said, “The suspects held my son responsible for their daughter’s death and lodged a complaint against him with the police. However, my son was acquitted by the court two years later.”

As the suspects wanted to avenge Daljit Kaur’s death so they hired Varinder Singh and Sukha Singh for murdering Kulbir, he said.

DSP Ravinder Singh said the police had registered FIR on the basis of the victim’s father complaint. He said investigation was in progress in this connection.
