Media leaks of Rahul Gandhi’s ED probe: Congress sends legal notice to Govt

The Congress on Wednesday sent a cease and desist notice to the government with copies to the Chief of Enforcement Directorate and Registrar of the Supreme Court asking for alleged media leaks of party leader Rahul Gandhi’s ongoing questioning by the financial crimes investigating agency to be stopped forthwith.
The notice, sent by Congress MP Vivek Tankha to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Home Minister Amit Shah, flags three reports that run on television channels on the basis of unidentified and unnamed sources claiming that Rahul Gandhi was evasive during the probe and appeared tutored by his lawyers.
Urging the government to show respect to the “courts and law”, the notice says the “Government should stop the charade and sham investigation and in the meantime cease and desist from leaking false information to media houses selectively.”
“The ED should immediately stop spreading false narratives against Rahul Gandhi for ulterior political motives and as a tool to settle political scores,” the Congress notice says further seeking action against ED officers responsible for the alleged leaks.
The notice quotes several court observations to make the point that selective media leaks could colour and jeopardize an ongoing probe.
The notice sent today with copies to the Registrar of the Supreme Court and the Director of Enforcement, is titled “Notice to cease and desist from illegal disclosure by the ED pertaining to Rahul Gandhi and to cease and desist from using the ED as a tool for political vendetta.”
Gandhi’s interrogation by the ED entered the third day today.
