MC to conduct daily mock drill in Lower Bazaar
In compliance with a recent Himachal Pradesh High Court ruling, the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) has initiated daily mock drills from CTO Chowk to Sher-e-Punjab restaurant via Lower Bazaar to address encroachments and decongest the area. A similar exercise is planned for the IGMC-The Ridge stretch.
Municipal Commissioner Bhupinder Attri highlighted the persistent issues of encroachments by shopkeepers and unauthorised street vendors, causing congestion and impeding emergency response during disasters. “Encroachments obstruct fire tenders, increasing the risk of loss of life and property during incidents like fires. These mock drills aim to ensure access and safety,” he explained.
As part of the drive, goods violating the guidelines will be confiscated at the risk of the shopkeeper or vendor. Repeated offenders will face strict action as per the High Court’s orders.
Additionally, shopkeepers and vendors have been instructed to avoid placing items over drains to maintain proper water flow and refrain from hanging merchandise in public spaces.
Attri urged the business community to adhere to the guidelines and contribute to maintaining cleanliness and compliance, emphasizing the critical role of cooperation in ensuring safety and smooth operations in the market.
This initiative aims to not only enforce regulations but also safeguard the area’s security and functionality for residents and visitors alike.
