Ambala, July 22

Sanyukt Sangharsh Party (SSP) president Gurnam Singh Charuni today said the Punjab Assembly election was a golden opportunity to establish farmers’ rule, but the SKM missed this opportunity.

Charuni, who is also the chief of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni), was here to hold a meeting with party workers regarding the upcoming Assembly election in Haryana. He called upon the party workers to start campaigning and make people aware of the “wrong policies” of the government. Speaking to mediapersons, Charuni said, “We had formed the party during the Punjab Assembly election, but we were not active in Haryana. The party has decided to contest the upcoming Assembly election in Haryana. The objective of contesting election is to clean the politics. We call upon the people, who want to save this country, to come forward and join the SSP in this struggle.”

The farmer leader said, “In Punjab election, the farmer unions of Punjab opposed us due to which we lost the election. They were anti-farmers. If the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) had fielded its leaders and told the people that even after the death of 750 farmers our demands were not accepted by the government, the farmers would have won 100 seats. There was an opportunity to establish a farmers’ rule and set an example by taking good decisions, but the SKM missed the opportunity.”

Criticising the government for privatisation in various sectors, Charuni said, “Everything has been commercialised in this country. While a handful of people are progressing, the others are being exploited. About 80 crore people are dependent on free ration, youngsters are forced to leave the country in search of jobs and the assets of the nation are being handed over to the corporate houses. Even after years of independence, citizens of this country struggle for treatment in hospitals.”

Charuni added, “In Haryana, we are open to forming alliance with any party except the BJP and JJP. We are focusing on the campaigning at present and will start holding discussions with like-minded parties after 10 days. There is a possibility of forming a third front in the state, and if there is no alliance we are ready to contest in all 90 Assembly segments.”

About the functioning of the Nayab Saini-led government, Charuni said, “Saini is a good person, but he has to adopt the policies of the BJP to favour corporate houses.”
