A woman from Ashok Vihar, North West Delhi, has been arrested for allegedly strangling her five-year old daughter to death as the child’s presence led to the rejection of a marriage proposal.

Police sources revealed that the incident came to light on Friday when Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital informed the police authorities about a child being brought in dead. Upon closer examination, they discovered marks of strangulation on the child’s neck, prompting an immediate investigation. The child’s mother along with other relatives were questioned.

During questioning, the mother initially remained silent but later broke down and confessed to the crime. According to the Delhi Police, the woman revealed that after her first husband left her, she met a man, named Rahul, on Instagram. The woman, hoping to marry Rahul, moved to Delhi with her child. However, Rahul and his family refused to accept the child, which led to the woman’s frustration and she strangled her daughter to death.

Further probe into the woman’s background revealed a harrowing story. Before relocating to Delhi, the woman had been living with a relative in Himachal Pradesh, where her child was reportedly sexually assaulted by the said relative.

In light of the disturbing events, officials said a case under Sections 103 (punishment for murder) and 65(2) (punishment for rape in certain cases) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered at the Ashok Vihar police station.
