A Special CBI court in Mohali sentenced a former sales officer of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Abhinav Sethi, to three-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh in an eight-year-old disproportionate assets case on September 30.

Sethi was found to have amassed Rs 28.11 lakh during the period from 2008 to 2012.

Seeking leniency, the convict submitted that his eight-year-old son was studying in Oman. He stated that he had no previous conviction, had shown good conduct during the course of the trial and was working in Oman after his services were terminated by HPCL. His case is covered under the PC Act prior to amendment of 2014 where minimum sentence is one year, he said.
