A man died by suicide after jumping into a water tank after his 18-year-old daughter reportedly eloped with a village youth in Kitlana village of Bhiwani district on Saturday morning.

The family alleged that the victim Manjeet Singh (40), was upset after his daughter fled from home with a village youth after he lured her. The police registered a case of abetment to suicide under Section 108 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against eight residents of the same village on the complaint of the brother of the victim and started investigation.

According to complainant Sandeep, the daughter of his elder brother Manjeet went missing from home on October 19. The family lodged a complaint with the police and suspected that a village youth had lured the girl and fled the village. The complainant alleged that the police did not make any effort to look for the girl despite requests from the family.

The complainant said that the youth, Rahul, took away the girl and his (Rahul's) family allegedly said that they would keep the girl in their home as Rahul’s wife. The complainant said the thought of getting his daughter married to a youth of the same village resulted in him taking the extreme step as he was unable to bear the pressure. He went to the waterworks and jumped to death in the tank. His body was found floating in the waterworks on Saturday. The police have registered a case against Rahul, Gaje Singh, Robin, Birmati, Jai Singh, Renu, Ravinder and Rinku and started investigation.
