Residents of Majitha Road, especially Ward No. 15, Jagdambay Colony, Friends Avenue and areas near Baba Meer Shah, are perturbed over the issue of non-lifting of garbage. Defunct garbage-lifting vehicles have disrupted door-to-door collection, forcing residents to dump waste on roadsides and street corners.

“We have not seen the garbage van for the last 10 days,” said Rishab Sehgal, a frustrated resident. “Our homes are overflowing with trash and the stink is unbearable. Vehicle No. 2505, assigned to our area, seems to be non-existent.”

Residents are concerned about the health problems non-lifting of garbage can cause. “Our children are prone to diseases due to filth and stench,” said Rakesh Kumar. “We have been complaining to the Amritsar Municipal Corporation, but no action has been taken so far.”

Residents of the area have demanded immediate resumption of door-to-door garbage collection and repair or replacement of defunct garbage-lifting vehicles. There should be regular cleaning of roads and street corners and staff of the solid waste management company should be penalized,” said Raj Kumar, another resident.

“We pay taxes, but basic services like garbage collection are not being provided,” said Sehgal. “It’s time for the authorities to take responsibility and act,” he said.

A team of MLA (North) Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has assured residents that they will address the issue. “We will take up the matter with the MC and ensure that garbage collection resumes immediately,” assured the MLA.

The garbage crisis has become a recurring issue in Amritsar highlighting the need for an efficient waste management system and better infrastructure. A number of garbage-lifting vehicles and compactors are lying defunct.
