Ludhiana, July 12

In a concerted effort to enhance environmental sustainability, officers and faculty of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, launched a plantation drive today. The drive was initiated under ‘Wake-Up Ludhiana’ with the aim of ‘combating climate change by enhancing green cover and biodiversity.

The event commenced with a ceremonial tree planting by Dr Inderjeet Singh, vice-chancellor, and Rajesh Gulati, PFS, Divisional Forest Officer, Ludhiana, who emphasised the pivotal role of universities in fostering ecological responsibility. Dr Singh highlighted the pressing need for collective action in enhancing the green cover, thereby, mitigating the impact of climate change in the state.

Dr JPS Gill, Director Student’s Welfare-cum-Estate Officer, said the plantation drive would cover various locations on the university campus, with the participants planting a variety native saplings received from the nurseries of the District Forest Department. Varsity’s NSS volunteers were also seen planting saplings at different locations on the campus.

Dr Inderjeet Singh and Dr JPS Gill said they would work to beautify the campus by establishing a ‘Nanak Bagichi’, following the Miyawaki Forest Model, as proposed by Rajesh Gulati, DFO, and Kamalpreet Singh, Range Officer. They also underscored the educational significance of the initiative and emphasised that beyond its environmental benefits, it would also serve as a valuable educational opportunity where the students shall get first-hand experience about the positive impact of the initiative on the local ecosystem.
