Tough road ahead for new MC House
The new Municipal Corporation House will face various challenges as the MC elections are being held after a delay of one-and-a-half year.
The city is facing various civic issues and the people will have high expectations from the upcoming House, hoping that the problems would be resolved by it.
A retired professor, Dr Satwinder Singh, said the major issue that needs to be tackled was waste management.
“Though Ludhiana is a smart city but one can see garbage littered all across the city. The first issue that the MC House should handle is the management of garbage. Door-to-door collection of segregated waste should be started in a planned manner,” he said.
Another city resident, Kulwinder Kaur, who stays in the Civil Lines said parking problem should be addressed. “We have no place for parking and parking lots are generally full. We need a solution to the problem,” she said.
Pushpinder Singh, who runs a factory at Focal Point, said the condition of roads was bad and all roads should be recarpeted on a priority basis. After only one rain, roads get damaged. It should not happen as poor infrastructure leads to wastage of public money and action should be taken against contractors who indulge in substandard works, he said.
Poor management of waste
It is one of the major issues that is being faced by the city at present. Door-to-door collection of waste and segregation of waste are major challenges. Various projects have been launched in the recent past for bioremediation of waste but only time will prove their efficiency.
Encroachments
One of the major reasons behind traffic snarls was encroachments on roads. The demand for setting up of vending zones was not fulfilled. However, the construction of the first street vending zone started in November.
24x7 water supply
The 24x7 surface water supply in the city still remains a dream. Many localities receive contaminated water supply. The city’s sewerage system is old and overburdened due to which many areas face sewerage blockages.
Poor condition of roads
City roads continue to remain in a poor state. Despite recarpeting and filling potholes various times, the real situation is exposed after a single rainfall. Lack of monitoring of quality during repair works is also resulting in wastage of funds.
Lack of parking space
Providing sufficient parking space is another challenge and managing parking lots is also important. Vehicles are towed away by the traffic police from busy markets. The people have been demanding sufficient parking space in city areas. Overcharging should also be checked at the lots.
