Players of the Ludhiana Basketball Academy (LBA) and those from Ludhiana district recorded victories in the boys’ and girls’ sections and advanced into the round robin league phase in the ongoing Sub-Junior Punjab State Basketball Championship being held at Guru Nanak Stadium here on Sunday. The three-day championship began on Saturday in which teams from all over the state are vying for the top honours.

In the boys’ section, LBA along with Mohali, Ludhiana and Jalandhar secured berths in the league phase while in the girls’ category, LBA, Ludhiana district, Kapurthala and Mohali won their respective matches to complete the league segment.

Yesterday, Ludhiana boys overpowered Hoshiarpur 44-34 and their counterparts got the bettet of Jalandhar 26-21. In another match in the boys’ section, Faridkot prevailed over Sangrur 46-34 whereas in the girls’ group, Mohali outwitted Sangrur 19-10.

Today, Ludhiana boys beat Bathinda 50-42, Mohali edged out Faridkot 32-8, Patiala outperformed Amritsar 34-28 and Jalandhar outclassed Patiala 33-18 while in the girls’ group, Kapurthala outnumbered Bathinda 31-16 and Mohali outplayed Ludhiana 25-18.

Daronacharya awardee (hockey) Baldev Singh declared the championship open.

Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association (PBA) was the guest of honour at the inaugural function.

JP Singh, president, District Basketball Association, Ludhiana (DBAL) along with Prabhjot Kaur, joint secretary, PBA; Prof Rajinder Singh Gill; Gurdeep Singh Romana, vice president, DBAL, besides coaches Rajinder Singh, KK Jaggi, Jaspal Singh, Saloni, Ravinder Kumar, Ajay Kumar and Arzoo were present on this occasion.
