Shiv Sena (Punjab) leader Sandeep Thapar, alias Gora, was allegedly attacked with swords by three Nihangs near the Civil Hospital here on Friday.
Two ‘Nihangs’ were arrested later.
Thapar suffered serious injuries on the head. He was taken to Cvil Hospital, Ludhiana, and from there was referred to DMC.
Thapar was quite vocal against Khalistan and terrorism in Punjab. He had even spoken against farmers’ agitation in Punjab. Some passersby also shot a video of the attack, which captured the brutal attack.
Thapar was accompanied by a gunman, but he allegedly did not react.
The gunman alleged that the Nihangs overpowered him and also tried to snatch his weapon due to which he could not act.
After the incident, Hindu leaders in large numbers gathered at DMC hospital. They raised slogans against Ludhiana Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal for allegedly failing to protect the leader.
They alleged that Thapar was under constant threat, but police had provided him only one gunman.
DCP Jaskiranjit Singh Teja said an attempt to murder case was registered against unidentified Nihangs and police teams were looking for the assailants.
When asked why the gunman accompanying Thapar didn’t react or used his weapon, the DCP said police would inquire and if any negligence came to fore, the department would take action against him.
