Punjab, Haryana girls enter netball quarterfinals
Punjab and the neighbouring state of Haryana scripted easy wins in the girls U-17 category in netball to enter the quarterfinals on the fourth day of the 68th National School Games being organised by the Punjab Education Department under the aegis of the School Games Federation of India at three venues here on Saturday.
In the pre-quarterfinals, Punjab recorded an authentic 31-7 victory against Indian Public Schools Conference (IPSC), while Haryana outnumbered Telangana 18-7 to advance into the last eight-stage.
Besides, Rajasthan and Maharashtra stitched up victories to join Punjab and Haryana in the quarterfinals. Rajasthan outwitted Puducherry 30-7, and Maharashtra outclassed DAV 18-9.
In karate (girls U-14), Navjot Kaur overpowered her opponent to clinch the gold medal in the below 26 kg weight category. Tasmiya Prakmulla from Maharashtra finished in second place to secure the silver medal, while S Yogadharshini of Tamil Nadu and Navya of Delhi shared the third position and had to be content with the bronze medal.
Punjab’s Mehak added another gold medal to the hosts’ tally when she emerged the winner in the below 22kg weight section. Kurumetla Yashmitha G of Andhra Pradesh secured the silver medal, while Vaishali of Uttar Pradesh and Anuradha Kumari of Bihar shared the bronze medal.
In the below 38 kg weight category, S Kasivishaiachi of Tamil Nadu stamped her class to win the gold medal, and Angel Asija of Punjab secured the silver medal. The bronze medal was shared by Kadimi Divya Sai of Andhra Pradesh and Archana Dayma of Vidya Bharti.
AS Nithila of Tamil Nadu secured the gold in the below 46 kg weight section, and Prisha Chaturvedi of Punjab bagged the silver medal. Sanjini Dhar of Bihar and Deeksha Singh Gurung of CBSE shared the bronze medal.
In handball (boys U-19), Maharashtra beat Uttrakhand 39-19, DAV beat IPSC 24-9, Himachal Pradesh beat West Bengal 24-9, Delhi beat Kerala 37-24, Odisha beat Uttrakhand 23-10, and Himachal Pradesh beat Gujarat 27-26.
In the girls section (handball), Chandigarh beat Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) 14-8, Maharashtra beat CBSEWSO 10-1, Chhattisgarh beat Odisha 15-6, CBSE beat Uttrakhand 22-8, Punjab beat Kerala 23-6, Gujarat beat Jharkhand 27-6, Madhya Pradesh beat IPSC 23-4, Uttar Pradesh beat Navodya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) 21-13, and Karnataka beat West Bengal 9-3.
