national school games: Punjab teams U-17 netball, handball champions
Punjab emerged champions in the boys and girls (U-17) sections on the sixth and penultimate day of the of the 68th National School Games being organised by the Punjab Education Department under the aegis of School Games Federation of India here on Monday.
In the girls’ final, Punjab players stamped their authenticity over Chhattisgarh whom they outnumbered 28-17 to lay their hands over the winners’ trophy.
In the hard-line match, Haryana defeated Karnataka 30-18 to finish as second runners-up and had to content with bronze medal.
In the boy’s section, Punjab faced a little challenge from their opponents from Chhattisgarh as hosts romped home 27-14 to bag top honours. In the match to decide third position, Delhi faced a stiff resistance from Vidya Bharti, before wrapping up the issue with a slender margin 22-20.
Hosts Punjab added one silver and two bronze medals in their kitty today. In judo (girls U-19), Punjab’s Sharanjeet Kaur, in below 70kg weight category, went down fighting against Nitya Sirohi (CBSE) to win silver medal.
In the boys’ section, Hasmanpreet Singh (below 81kg weight) and Nitpreet Singh (below 90kg weight), both from Punjab finished at third place to clinch bronze medals.
Punjab emerged champions in both the groups in handball also. In the boys (U-19), Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana secured top three position and in the girls category, Punjab clinched gold medal while Haryana and Delhi finished as first and second runners-up, respectively.
