A cloth showroom in Field Ganj went up in flames allegedly due to an electrical malfunction. The inferno spread with an alarming speed, consuming the entire first floor in a few minutes.

Employees, who were standing outside the showroom raised the alarm and alerted others. Their swift response prevented loss of lives as all workers rushed out from the shop on time.

However, the showroom’s design made it difficult for individuals to combat the blaze and the fire brigade was called to the scene. Despite valiant efforts by bystanders, the fire continued to rage. Thanks to firefighters’ rapid response, the blaze was brought under control within an hour.

Though the fire did not cause any injury or loss of life, a huge stock worth lakhs of rupees gutted in the blaze. Furniture lying inside the showroom was also got burnt.

The cause of the fire remains a mystery. In the aftermath of the incident, a fire brigade official stressed the importance of fire safety, particularly with the approaching festive season.

Fire officials urged owners of commercial establishments to instal sufficient fire extinguishers and make other necessary safety arrangements so that such incidents could be controlled at the initial stage. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the need for fire safety arrangements.

Since the affected showroom is located in a busy market, panic gripped shopkeepers in the area. Meanwhile, in another incident, a small fire broke out at a hosiery unit in the Industrial Area A on Friday morning but was brought under control by firefighters in a few minutes.
