Ludhiana: Miscreant posing as cop calls businessman, seeks money
Ludhiana, July 27
A businessman from Kesar Ganj Mandi here received a WhatsApp call from a Pakistan number. The caller introduced himself as assistant sub-inspector (ASI) from the Ludhiana police. He has put the picture of Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, IPS officer of the Punjab Police, on his WhatsApp profile photo.
On the call, the person took the name of the businessman and asked about his nephew.
The caller asked the man about the place where his brother’s son studying, to which the businessman told him that his nephew studies in Phagwara. When he asked him how he knew about his nephew, the suspect said his nephew was in police custody and an investigation was going on.
The caller introduced himself as ASI Gurpreet Singh, however, the WhatsApp profile picture he was using was of IG, Punjab Police, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar.
“The miscreant said my nephew is in police custody as he helped two criminals who looted Rs 10 lakh and committed a murder as well. The robbers had also called my nephew, as per the miscreant, and the nephew helped them in the crime. The caller said when the police was taking my nephew to the police station, he got scared and gave the number of his family members,” the businesman said.
“When I told the caller that I am not able to connect to my nephew over phone, the former said his number was blocked by the police, adding that If I want him to be free, it will cost around Rs 50,000 to 60,000 and the amount was demanded on Google Pay. He also gave me two-hour ultimatum, otherwise, threatened to register a case,” the industrialist said.
